Read: An excuse to use my other Harry Potter LJ icon

One thing I forgot to mention, and I've been thinking about all day....

As much as I was upset about the cutting of the final EPIC BATTLE on the rooftops of Hogwarts, I did like the addition of the Weasley's Burrow burning. This was added in, and wasn't in the books, right?

Anyway, I thought it was an easy way for them to establish that Harry isn't totally virtuous (he wants to fucking kill Bellatrix) and that Ginny totally loves Harry (see: running through fire and into the midst of Death Eaters).

Just the shots of those two running through the tall grass were pretty frickin' gorgeous.

THERE'D BETTER BE BIGASS FIGHTS IN BOTH OF THE DEATHLY HALLOWS MOVIES. THAT IS ALL.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This was not one of my favorite books; I think my favorite might still be book 5, aside from 7. I've only read 7 once, though, so many re-readings are required.

In this movie, Draco hung around and was emo all over the place, just like he was in the book.
My annoyance by this was about the same level as reading it.

While irritated by the romantic sub-plots in the book, they were much more adorable to watch in the movie. This movie did make me laugh a lot.

I can't imagine grasping all of the fine little plot-points without having read the books....honestly, I can't figure out how I would know WTF was going on unless I read them, and I feel kind of bad for people who don't read them.

What annoyed me the most was the removal of the huge roof-top fight at the end. Like, WTF I want to watch the DA/Order fighting the Death Eaters, HELLO!!

Oh, well.

Like most of the Harry Potter movies, it was pleasant enough to watch, but I vastly prefer the books.

What Has Happened

Where do I begin?

Ryan was here Friday through Sunday, and we had a most excellent weekend, spent with friends and stores and restaurants. On Saturday, we visited Gretchen at the organic farm she's watching while the family is away. We made guacamole dip from scratch, which was exciting for me. I think that it's something I could make by myself! We also looked at the chickens, were given a brief tour of the farm, and then watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as Ryan hadn't seen it yet. I still believe that it is my favorite of the Harry Potter films (which are still far inferior to the books).

By the way, Gretchen wrote an entry in her LiveJournal a while ago that I had meant to link to, and forgot. It is about coffee, and focuses on Starbucks versus fair trade coffee (actual fair trade coffee). And it is here. I personally don't drink coffee, but I feel like it's helpful to pass the word along.

We also traveled around State Street with Steph, including a walk inside of the Capitol building. I love showing people around the Capitol! Sometimes I forgot how awesome it is that I work there. OMF! Today at work, I volunteered to work during the Governor's State of the State address. It's going to be on Wednesday, January 23rd. So look for me on Wisconsin Eye!

So yes. This was in addition to many other happening, some involving Antoine. All together, it was a most enjoyable weekend, and I think Ryan and I both had an awesome (but still relaxed) time.

Sunday night, I ate a delicious dinner prepared by some of Antoine's friends.

And today was my first day back at work, which was nice. I also went to the library, and triumphed by collecting about 12 books that were on hold for me.

As well as making another career advising appointment.

And yet. I'm still notice the large gaping hole in my life, which is the lack of any sense of purpose or goal. Still, I made another career advising appointment, and at some point, I'll find something to waste time with in the interim. If writing doesn't end up being my "true calling" or whatever, it's going to take a while to find a way to be happy, I think. Shit.

We will find this fucking troll. And we will kill. His fucking ass.

Why yes, reader, my blog entry titles will now be taken from "Wizard People" for the next indefinite amount of time (see "crying into your pillow" two entries ago.) Do you not know what Wizard People is? Go! Laugh! (My favorite is here) I find it's best watched in small doses.

Me: Why did I get candy on my steps?
Chad: It's from my mom.
Me: Why?
Chad: St. Nick came.
Me: .....My mom sucks.

I wrote 1.5 pages of a paper before trudging to class, and wrote another 1.5 pages during class and at work. I had hoped to get more done at work today, but holy hell, we were busy. (Remember that I need 8. I'm also thinking that it would be prudent to have like, in-text parenthetical citations, and maybe, I don't know, a coherent flow to the paper.)

I HAVE NOW EATEN A PEANUT BUTTER SANTA CLAUS COATED IN CHOCOLATE! I AM THE ULTIMATE. I WILL PWN THE EARTH.

Today, I got dumplings from Pel'meni. On the way to work, the sauce stuff spilled on my mitten, my coat, and my pants leg. Luckily, I had other pants in my backpack so that I would arrive at work not!crusted in snow. Getting the stains out will have to wait at least until tomorrow or Friday, though, which might mean that they never come out? That's unfortunate.

Today, I discovered I've been doing alternate-side street parking all wrong. Luckily, this means that I don't have to move my car tonight.

THE END.

GRINDELDORE FTW

If you haven't finished the 7th Potter book by now, it's your own damn fault.

J.K. Rowling has been releasing tidbits of information about the characters that never made it into the books, now that they're finished.

According to this article.....

DUMBLEDORE WAS GAY. AND IN LOVE WITH GRINDELWALD. I AM SO HAPPY. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW. OMG. REMEMBER IN JULY, WHEN I LOVED IT?

Fandom freakout is here.

Enjoy beautimous fanart!

Things You Must Know

There are so many things to blog about, not the least of which being all the awesome Harry Potter fanart that was posted to the Internet while I was gone.

LOL, I am watching Buffy as I write this blog entry. And Angel is professing his love for Buffy, blahblahblah, "I wanted to take your heart and warm it and encase it with my own."
Buffy: That's beautiful. Thank you.
*hug*
Buffy: Or, literally? It's actually kind of gross.
Angel: Yeah, I was just thinking that, too.
*scene change*

I love this show.

On Friday, some of my fellow Bleak House interns and I went across the street to a bookstore that's going out of business. I could fill up a paper bag for $7....AND I DID.
BOOTY:
Hatchet - Gary Paulsen (I loved this book in grade school)
Another antique copy of "Evangeline," by Longfellow, with photographs of places in the story. I love this poem, which is saying something, as I tend to dislike most poetry.
Sirena - Donna Jo Napoli (I love her retellings of fairy tales for young adults)
The High King - Lloyd Alexander (I've been meaning to read stuff by this dude, and it won a Newberry Award, soooooo win)
Another copy of Redwall, by Brian Jacques. This is my third copy of this book. But this one is the British version, and has a pretty cover!
The Oxford Companion to Classical Literature because I am not a geek at all.
Irish Cures, Mystic Charms & Superstitions with fun gems like, "Do not start sewing a dress on a Saturday, because the wearer will die within a year."
A Trilogy boxed set by Calvin Miller. "A mythic retelling of the story of the New Testament." There are like, goblins on the cover. It looks amazing.
The Golden Apples of the Sun and other stories - Ray Bradbury. Because one can never have enough Ray Bradbury
Lieutenant Hornblower - C.S. Forester
Hornblower and the "Hotspur" - C.S. Forester. BECAUSE I LOVE HORATIO
The Three Muskateers - Alexandre Dumas. Pretty hardcover edition!
The Secrets of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire - SotE was the first Star Wars book I ever read, and this has cool sketches and stuff. :D

Needless to say, Friday was glorious. Speaking of Bleak House, by the way, they received a nice mention in Friday's Capital Times.

There was lots of driving on Friday. Antoine and I, and Jenny from high school, drove to where my parents live. Once Jenny-less, Antoine and I continued all the way to our trailer. The kids were asleep when we arrived, but woke us up at 6am Saturday. I had spent the night on couch cushions cover in sheets at the foot of my parents' bed.

Overall, though, it was a fun weekend. We walked around in the woods on Saturday morning, finding some blueberries and using Dylan's incessant talking to ward off the supposed local bear and her 3 cubs. We swam in the lake and read books and ate brats for dinner, and went for a drive afterwards. We played some Trivial Pursuit, as is Up North tradition, and then went to sleep. Sunday morning, the kids slept later, and were quieter. Nothing too exciting happened before we left right after lunch. It takes 4.5 hours to get from Up North to Madison, and I was exhausted, but we made it here okay (after stopping for soda, ice cream, jewelry for me from my parents' house, and Jimmy John's). I think that Antoine had fun, in spite of the screaming children. I hope so! I did. And, because Antoine was there, my mom didn't yell at me all weekend. It was awesome.

It feels so nice to be back. I'm really glad that I love both of my jobs this summer. There was no sense of dread whatsoever in leaving the forests of northern Wisconsin and returning to my life.

Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd! Everybody freak out.

The now standard linkspam of hot and angsty Harry Potter characters. DEATHLY HALLOWS SPOILERS, DON'T CLICK. Make sure to full-view the Deviantart stuff.
Wheee!
More.
SWEET.
Sadness!
Delicious ANGST.
Wahhhh, cuteness!

I love the Internet.

my wish on a wing, and i'll send it up to you

Today was better than yesterday in terms of angst, so I guess that's good. Today at work, I got to go all the way up to the very top of the dome of the Capitol because my boss was giving a tour to a co-worker's family. It was so amazing. Inside of the rotunda, we were underneath the mural that you can see from the middle of the inside of the Capitol. I could have reached out and touched it, if I wanted to. Then, we went up to the topmost balcony and looked around outside. We were up much higher than when we were on the Observation Deck for the Fourth of July. Everyone looked so tiny from up there. We also looked at a ventilation grate that my boss said had been there since the Capitol was rebuilt in 1907 (or 1917, whatever). A lot of people had scratched their initials into the metal. Someone had written their name and the year 1933. I didn't have any sharp objects, so opted to carve in my last name and first initial, along with the year, with my ring.

Tomorrow, Antoine and I will be driving all the way Up North, bringing my friend Jenny along from here to Green Bay (and then continuing further north alone). I've downloaded the audio book version of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass since we have so much driving ahead of us. Also, it's a pretty cool version - Pullman himself is the narrator, with a full cast for each of the characters. Sweet.

And, you know, there's the lake and the family and the Up North-ness of it all. I wish it wasn't so far away. I would go there every weekend.

Harry Potter. Because we will never be satiated.
Was the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows not enough for you? J.K. Rowling gives some more information about what happens after the books end. Obvious spoilers for DH are there.

Deathly Hallows fanart by Makani. Mild spoilers in the images (new character shown, plus one of the most amusing scenes in the book).

Okay, I have never been into slash before, but there are a couple of situations in this book (and I guess before, too - Sirius/Remus = probable) where it just makes so much sense. I love this couple! I won't say the names, 'cause it's a fairly big spoiler!

Fanfic and fanart for "The Rules of Being a Godson." Again, to give the pairing would be to give major spoilers, so I won't do it!

Lastly, J.K. Rowling reveals the character who was slated to die in Deathly Hallows and didn't, and also that she does plan to publish a Harry Potter encyclopedia. And the fandom rejoiced.

Nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bull-fighters.

I feel like I'm in such a good mood right now. I think I'm still on a high from Harry Potter. For some reason, afterward, I feel like reading voraciously, writing my own stories, watching as much TV/movies/anime as possible, finding a way to play piano again, and listen to music. I can't stop thinking about the book, and I lent it to Angela on Saturday and haven't read any of it since.

I recently finished reading the book The Tale of Despereaux, and I loved it. It looks like they're making a movie, and the voice cast line up looks amazing! I am excited now.

Everyone should read this post over at Althouse. Like, wow. I love her blog, by the way. It's the only political blog I read.

Also, WTF is up with a plane landing on Highway 41?! I drive on there all the time when going from one city to another in eastern Wisconsin. I can't even imagine how much I would freak out if I were there.

I will post pictures from the Harry Potter release party eventually. I think I get shy about posting pictures of myself sometimes, 'cause I think I look bad in them. :P

Jackie and the Deathly Hallows

I don't think I've ever read or watched anything that made me burst into tears as much as reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows did. Honestly, I think I cried at least 15 times, with two good sobbing sessions. For reals.

Anyway, I'll write about things that don't contain spoilers, at first. Things that everyone can read. On Friday night, Nina, Isa, and I grabbed dinner at Pizza Hut. There, we saw a dude dressed as a house elf sitting with 3 other people. "Are you going to Barnes & Noble, too?" I yelled, and they answered, "YES!" Other people in the establishment tittered with laughter. Oh my God, I love this fandom (and I'm not even overly involved in it! I don't do the Harry Potter fanfiction thing).

At Barnes & Noble, there were adorable children dressed as characters, badass adults with amazingly accurate costumes, MANGA WAITING FOR ME TO BE READ. lol, there was a dude holding a specific color of balloons who was in charge of our numbered section once we were supposed to start organizing ourselves into a line. We gave him so much shit - I think he was like, 18. "So, you're going to tell us exactly when we can get behind you in line, right?" I asked.
"Uhhhh.....yeah. Yeah," he said.
"You'd better not be lying," I said. "This IS IMPORTANT."
"R-right."
"....So do you think Harry is a horcrux?" and then we had amazing conversations about our theories for what would happen.

All 3 local TV stations were there. I made an amulet at an activity table, and got a moon & stars painted on my face. I went up to people with good costumes and asked them to get their picture taken with me.

At the very end, we did a verbal count-down, and then once they started to pass out books, Nina, Isa, and I put our headphones on and listened to mp3 players so as not to risk getting spoiled. I did appreciate, though, that one Barnes & Noble employee scaled a stand-alone book-shelving staircase in the middle of the entrance, brandishing a copy of the book in triumph. AMAZING. I LOVE HARRY POTTER. We all yelled with joy.

During the car ride home, Isa read out loud most of the first chapter by the light of her cell phone. Once we got home, she knew that I had started at the same time, and was calling me about every half hour so that we could freak out, being like, "OMG! I KNOW! I KNOW!" I unintentionally fell asleep around 3am and then woke up at 8:00 and continued reading. I think that Isa called me about once an hour until 2:00pm, lols. It made reading it so much better, though! Especially in the beginning, we kept trying to come up with theories and such. The whole book has such a heightened sense of paranoia.

I apologize in advance. Those of you who regularly read my blog already know this, but my first reaction to anything that I like is uncontrolled squee. So, that's what you'll get. :)

Here are my thoughts on the book. THERE ARE SPOILERS. EVERYTHING IS SPOILED. EVEN LITTLE THINGS. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ, DO NOT CLICK.

No, this post contains no spoilers.

HARRY POTTER IS SO INTENSE.

Holy crap. So, firstly, I had had my book reserved at Borders. But, my work friends Nina and Isa convinced me to get it at Barnes & Noble instead (then I could use my car to drive them!). This morning, I received an email from Borders about how they're giving out nice posters, glow-in-the-dark wands, and etc. Barnes & Noble better have good stuff, that's all I have to say!

This afternoon around 3:00pm, we called Barnes & Noble to check and see if we could show up at 9am Friday to pick up a wristband that would secure us a place in line. We were informed that they would begin handing them out at 5:00pm Thursday (as in, this day). There was a mild freak-out in the page room (yes, we called from work). Then, we left work early (lols), took the bus to my house, and then Nina's boyfriend picked us up and drove us all the way to West Towne Mall to get our wrist bands. It turns out that they started handing them out before 5:00pm because the line outside was blocking the doors to the ShopKo next-door. So, despite getting there shortly after 5:00pm, the numbers on our wristbands are like, 340 or something.

I think we're going out for dinner tomorrow night, and then heading to Barnes & Noble. Yes, I will wear my cloak and not put my hair up, and thus will be Hermione.

I feel pretty crappy tonight (physically), but I'm glad that I stayed up late so tomorrow won't suck as much. I'm staying home from my internship so as to not feel sickly.

Tomorrow, I hope to sample "wizard drinks," read manga for free, get my face painted, "Make my own amulet," get sorted, and beat 12-year-olds in Harry Potter trivia. Interestingly enough, one of my co-workers who is younger than I am will be staffing the event. I will be running around squealing like a little girl. I'll stay up reading as late as I can.

I really don't know how to describe my excitement. I remember discovering Harry Potter in middle school, I think. I love this series. It's true that most of the characters don't have a whole lot of depth to them, but J.K. Rowling has a definite knack for plot, and such a nice way of weaving words to tell a story. Most people don't like the protagonist himself, Harry, but I do. Particularly in Order of the Phoenix, his rebellion against adults and exasperation at their refusal to clue him in to vital information that would help him resonated with me a lot at a time when I was in high school, didn't hold much respect for my teachers, and was sick of being treated like a child by my parents. Not even that, and I know I've said this before, but it is amazing how universal this is. I mean, I am the frigging president of my university's Anime Club. I know what it's like to meet random people and be like, "OMG, you love this obscure series? ME TOO!" But with Harry Potter, every single person I've ever met has at least heard of it, and most have at least seen one of the movies. The lucky ones have read the books. Some are sci-fi geeks, some are my co-workers who would normally mock me (in good fun) for my geeky tendencies.

And for God's sake, Steph, if you do not read books 5 and 6 and then 7, I swear to God, I might kill you. You love this series; the books are better; half the questions you asked me in your last email were ANSWERED IN BOOK 5, KTHX.

If you love the movies, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE READ THE BOOKS. They are 5,000 times better.

Starting now, I'm staying away from any news site except for The Wheeler Report, and not checking my LJ friends list. Sorry, I don't trust all of you, ;) (although I do trust most of you!)

Once I get the book, all time will be devoted to reading it and eating. After that, I'm finally reading all of the spoiler reports that were on the Internet, and seeing how accurate they were, and having some lols about it. And then, of course, writing huge blog entries about it. I am a tad nervous, because I really didn't like Half-Blood Prince at first. It took me a while, because it really felt like fanfiction at first. Now, I read all of book six as set-up for seven.

I am sad that the series is ending, yes. So many of my online friends I know from Kell Yarwood's old messageboard, WOFS, and I think the one thing we all had in common was Harry Potter. We've been swapping theories and impressions on movies/books for what, five years now? I'm glad to have met all of you (and yes, rest of my LJ Friends list, all of you, too!), and I hope that we can find another fandom together.

J.K. Rowling, please publish your rumored encyclopedia after book 7! There are so many back stories we need to know!

Also, random point: I always imagine Harry Potter as cartoon characters (too much anime? Maybe). In my mind, Harry Potter is a cartoon drawn by makani. (Full-view it! Sirius is hawt, as he should be!)

My Internet friend Bethany said it best when she said, "No matter how the story ends, Harry lives."

OH EM GEE, I can't even describe my excitement.

World, do you have ANY IDEA how hard it is for me not to look up the 7th Harry Potter book, which has been leaked in its entirety to the Internets? People are reading it AND POSTING ABOUT IT.

I might have to implement my "Don't read your LiveJournal FL at all because you have no self-control!"

It's just....wtf. On Friday night, I am so bringing my mp3 player for when they start passing the books out, even though I'll be there with some friends, and possibly Antoine. What the hell, I never refer to my friends from work by name. I guess I don't know them well enough to assume it's okay, but blogs might weird some of them out. I dunno.

Harry Potter Book 7 Prediction meme. You shouldn't read it unless you've read book 6, even though they are only speculation for book 7.

YOU SPOIL FOR ME IN THE COMMENTS, AND I WILL KILL YOU, I SWEAR TO GOD.

Potpourri

Holy crap, I have so many windows open that it has now become necessary for me to blog quickly before I try and fall asleep right away. I work bright and early tomorrow!

Anyway, link-spam first.

Harry Potter
Firstly, I was reading some Q&A over at J.K. Rowling's website (yes, she actually answers the questions). I will link to ones that I found intriguing.
Link 1. (It was said somewhere in an interview that a character who had previously displayed no magical qualities would do so in book 7. Thus, my guess is Dudley.)
Link 2. (SPOILERS for book and movie #5)
Link 3. (Spoilers for book 5; wasn't in movie. I hope this means that the dead Order of the Phoenix will fight the Inferi or something. It would suck a lot if they became the Inferi.)
Link 4. (BUT WAS SOMEONE ELSE??)
Link 5. THIS HAS BEEN KILLING ME FOR LIKE, 2 YEARS. WTF IS UP WITH PETUNIA?!

I liked the write-ups two of my LiveJournal friends made about the fifth Harry Potter movie. Obviously, spoilers for movie/book 5 behind the cuts. mon_starling's thoughts, and snowystingray's thoughts.

Mugglenet's list of loose ends that should be tied up in book 7. Obvious spoilers for book 6 are there.

Race
Another post on the Transformers movie, with a lot of conversation in the comments. I find everyone's comments very insightful. I still have no desire to see the movie, and am glad it's not my childhood that's being messed with. :P

An essay: Helpful Hint for the Colorblind: BE LESS BLIND

Racism on an International Scale, a post and link roundup by Oyceter. It focuses on the mentality held by people in other countries that "racism is not a problem there," and is only a huge issue in America. Oyceter points out that more often than not, the person making this claim is a member of the race in power in the country in question. Interesting thoughts, links, and comments abound.

Oh yeah. Me
What else has been on my mind? Oh yeah. What the heck has been up with the Romeo x Juliet anime lately? I'm through episode 11, and it has been teh lame lately. I feel like I'm forever waiting for something awesome to happen to live up to this amazing premise, and it never does. It's like watching Last Exile or something. Also, what happened to the gender-role inversion? I literally laughed when Romeo promised to protect Juliet. Like, wtf.

On Thursday night, Steph came to visit me! We went out with my co-workers, talked endlessly, woke up and shopped, ate some foods, and generally had an excellent time. I've missed her a lot, and I found a birthday present for Dylan. We celebrated his 6th birthday on Sunday, when I was at home at my parents' house. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time.

My sister's cat had been MIA for nearly 3 weeks. It had gotten out the back door, and hadn't come back. I had been mildly mortified because Olivia, my 8-year-old niece, kept saying things like, "Our cat is gone right now, but she is coming back!" and I was all, oh God, they will be traumatized. But on Saturday, someone who lives a block away from my sister's house called, and said that they had found it. So, now they brought it home, much skinnier than she had been before. Now, when I pet her, she is docile, and doesn't randomly bite my hand any more.
Amelia (my four-year-old niece) sat on the couch while the cat sat on top of the head rest. "Kitty, my kitty came home," chanted Amelia, resting her head against the back of the couch. The cat stretched out a declawed paw and rested it on Mia's forehead, intermittently moving the paw back and forth, caressing the top of Mia's curly head. WTF, motherly cat love!

On Saturday, my extended family and I attended a wedding for my cousin's step-daughter. It was at a country club, and was gorgeous. We stole cake before we should have, took over the dance floor, sat on the balcony and waited for Brewers results on my cousin's cell phone, laughed at inappropriate moments, stole sand dollars off the tables, and my mom and sister each stole a floral centerpiece from a dining table. Mostly, though, was that dancing thing. Really, there are so many girls in my family - from age 4 to 64 (my mom), we pwned it. It was amazing. I only wish Antoine could have been there, but it's okay. I think he's coming Up North with me in two weekends! OMF!

THE LONGEST POST EVER IS ENDED.

WIN.

So, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Flippin' rocked. For the first time, the movie felt like the book. Yeah, they changed stuff, but nothing in a way that annoyed me (except the huge chunks of stuff cut out). Really, I don't understand how some of you people can enjoy the movies without having read the books. It blows my mind. There are so many things that I think I would have reacted with, "Wait.....what?" had I not already known exactly what was going on.

Also, we saw the movie at the IMAX, so the climax scene was in 3-D, and it was frigging awesome. Really. Can the DVD have 3-D? Please?

I don't know why the fifth book is my favorite. I think that maybe it's because the biggest antagonist isn't Voldemort, but humanity's own stupidity. Also, I really felt like Harry's frustration with the adults treating him like a child was justified, and very reflective of what I felt like when I was 15/16, anyway.

The post has no title!

So, I figured out a way for you all to read the 6 years' worth of Archives of this blog - the link is back on the sidebar, for better or for worse. Holy crap, there are so many embarrassing entries. How could I put some of that stuff on the Internet?! I am a terrible person. Oh well. Reading old posts has been making me giggle a lot for the last 45 minutes, remembering old jokes and friends and posts titled "HIMMENA." I was a lot more vocal about my feelings back then. Apparently becoming an adult means that you hide them.

Transformers
So, I haven't seen the Transformers movie, nor do I have any inclination to do so - the franchise wasn't part of my childhood. Still, I've read things online that have made me sad. Faith Hicks (artist behind the Demonology 101 online comic!) wasn't a fan of girl-ogling. Another person (who was at Wiscon!) has written in depth about the racial issues that this movie has. Hollywood! Why must you suck?!

The Fourth of July
Okay, so in my rush to slap a blog post up, I totally forgot to blog about my Fourth of July activities, which is sad because it was so much fun!

Firstly, I didn't have to work, so that was cool. And Antoine didn't have to work, either! He came to my house and we played video games.

Then we joined some of my fellow pages/friends on the lawns of the Capitol for Concerts on the Square: Special Nation's Birthday Edition. They had some fifties-ish music, but also played the 1812 Orchestra AND SHOT CANNONS. I WAS SO EXCITED. One of my co-workers made some amazing sandwiches, and the rest of us brought things like potato salad and chips and brownies and goodness (and yes, we ate the leftovers all day Thursday).

THEN, after Concerts on the Square was done, we went inside the Capitol and, after tidying up, went upstairs and outside to the Observation Deck, which surrounds the entire Capitol. We could see fireworks being set off from about four different towns surrounding Madison, and it was amazing (also, some illegal ones being set off inside the city limits!). The sun had gone down by that point, so the temperature was nice, too - especially on the north side, where you could feel the wind. Also, on the Observation Deck, we're right beneath the giant Greco-Roman statues that are up there, so that was awesome, too.

Right before we left, we went inside and up a little bit more to the Trumpters' Balcony, which goes around the circumference of the Rotunda inside the Capitol. We were much closer to the mural that's up on the very top, and could also see the beautiful marble floor and pillars, tiled mosaics, and portraits of all four floors of the Capitol at once. So awesome. It was a very nice Fourth of July.

Saturday
My family came down to visit me, which included both of my parents, my sister Julie, her husband Kevin, and their 3 children: Olivia, Dylan, and Amelia.

They arrived around 9:30am, and the first thing we did (after showing them my room) was go to the Farmers Market. It was insufferably hot outside yesterday, and my family, parents especially, don't do well in heat. We made it halfway around Capitol Square and then went inside to walk around. My sisters children were very pleased with the incredibly beautiful Capitol, considering it to be an upgrade from my previous job at ShopKo. I love walking around inside the Capitol, but truth be told, it makes me a little sick. I can think of a lot better use for taxes than marble floors and oak paneling.

After that, we picked up Antoine and drove out to McDonald's for lunch (when there are lots of people, cheaper is better!). From there, we went to Half-Price Books (OMF, I got a volume of manga for $2; WIN), and then to Trader Joe's. I think that overall, the family was impressed with both stores, although they didn't buy much. I came out of Trader Joe's with food that will get me through most of the week, and also a new plant. I've kept my Lucky Bamboo alive for like, 4 months now, so now I have a new one. I like the idea of plants in rooms, but I also like it more when they're alive.

After Trader Joe's, everyone was tired and hot, so we came back to my house and watched some of a Harry Potter movie that was on TV, while I followed Amelia and Dylan upstairs to my room and tried to persuade them that it wasn't necessary to touch all of my things.

We ate dinner at Ella's Deli on my family's way out of town, and Olivia, Dylan, and Amelia enjoyed two rides on the carousel. Saying goodbye wasn't very sad, because this coming weekend, I am going home. So, friends from high school take note! I will be home the 13-15, and will definitely be up for doing something Friday after dinner.

I did end up going to see "Paprika" with Antoine, Creighton, Carolyn, Kristen, Louise, and other various people from Anime Club at the new Sundance Theatre. It was...amazing. Very trippy, ridiculously well-animated (really, I couldn't even believe some of it), great music, interesting premise, and masterfully executed, as is usual with works done by Satoshi Kon. Highly recommended!

Of course, afterward, everybody came over to our house. I struggled to stay awake, but eventually just came upstairs and crawled into bed.

Harry Potter
Hey, did you guys know that J.K. Rowling has confirmed that the bartender at the Hog's Head is Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth? I hadn't! Yay.

Anyway, everything else contains SPOILERS FOR BOOK 6, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. If you are one of those people who only watches the movies and doesn't read the books, then, well, what the hell is the matter with you. The books are 80,000,000 times better. Anyway.

Why Snape is not evil!

Sometime before Book 7 is released, I'll put up a list of all the things I think will happen, or just what I want to happen before the end. I really love being around as this fandom has evolved over time. I never wrote fanfiction or anything, but just reading the news online and discussing the books with both my friends from school and with people all over the world through the Internet has been amazing. I'll be sad when it's over.

I'll show you my strength now / I'll show you my love now

HOLD ON, IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST. There is a new trailer out for the fifth Harry Potter movie, Order of the Phoenix. Thus far, I haven't cared for the Harry Potter movies too much despite loving the books. Still, OotP was my favorite. Everyone complains about Harry's angst, but you know, he had good reasons for his angst in this one, and really, the majority of the Badass Action goes down in this book. Plus, Luna arrives on the scene, and what more could you ask for? The movie looks pretty sweet. ALSO, Helena Bonham Carter will be Bellatrix, and yeah. I'm sold. Some time before the 7th books is released, I will find all my own entries with theories and make a list or something.

My room is a mess, and I feel like a complete slob. I can tell that finals are drawing near because I keep having drawn-out papers due. I finished my Lord of the Rings paper for tomorrow, but will then spend all of tomorrow working on the paper due Tuesday. I don't have time to work ahead, let alone stay on top of my readings. I'm glad to be going home this weekend. I need time out of this room, even if I'll still be chained to my homework.

The farmer's market on Saturday was nice. I think that I got a little more tan without burning. Today, I've felt sickly and weak all day, which is pretty annoying, but will probably be even moreso tomorrow when I'm not lying around writing on my laptop all day.

I really like the latest opening sequence for the anime NANA. It seems like it's taking forever for new episodes to get subbed, so I was really excited when two were released this weekend. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone else who watches this anime, or reads the manga, so I won't bother with fangirl squee.

Every time I read an xkcd comic, I swear that the artist can read my mind.

On to what's interactive! Somebody mooched a book from me on Bookmooch.com, which means it's time for you all to help me decide what to mooch. Here are your options (these are not the only books I want to own, but rather ones that are available on Bookmooch RIGHT NOW):
Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Star Wars: A New Hope, Volume 3 manga by Hisao Tamaki (I already have 1, and one volume each from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi)
Star Wars: A New Hope, Volume 4 manga by Hisao Tamaki
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

Lastly, if it could stop raining, that would be GREAT because for it to be temperate up here when it's anything more than 60F, my windows must be open.

Lastly for reals, an online quiz, because I don't do them very often and this one is TEH IN-DEPTH. The descriptions on the page are pretty accurate, so get excited. Or something.

This post has no title

OMG
YO. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released on July 21, 2007!! Now I need to decide what to do. I think that since Book 4 or something, I went to the midnight party at Barnes and Noble back at home. But this summer, I'll be living in Madison. Should I go all the way back home? Or stay here? I DON'T KNOW, BUT I SHOULD PRE-ORDER NOW.

Yes. I am that cool.

Bloggity-Blog
And now, on blogs. It's weird writing blog entries, because really I'm writing for two audiences. Firstly, there's my blog, which is read primarily by people I know from high school/college/life. Secondly, there's my LiveJournal, which is read primarily by people I know via the internets. So! When you guys leave comments, you should know that there are comments in two places! Blog whores should investigate the LiveJournal for more comments, and LiveJournal whores can peruse the blog. No, I don't know why I do things this way either.
But that's not all on blogs! My awesome friend Steph has started writing in her blog again. So you should read it. Because most of her entries make me laugh a lot. Also! My friend Jennifer has started a blog that will chronicle her study-abroad adventures this semester in Madrid, Spain.

Who is YOUR favorite Disney heroine?
I need to think of a good poll question for tomorrow's Almanac page in The Daily Cardinal. When I copy edited Monday night, all we could come up with was "Who's Your Favorite Disney Princess?" But that is so limiting! Like, a person could not pick Belle from Beauty and the Beast, because she's not a princess. Maybe I'll go with "heroine" instead. But, who to include? Who to discard? I'll have to include Ariel because most people our age are fans (even though she's selfish and only motivated by her own desires for the entire movie!). Perhaps Nala, because I love The Lion King. Who else? Jasmine, Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora, Mulan (yes! Female empowerment! She was not the stupid bitch who whined until a man came and saved her), Pocahantas, Lady, Esmeralda. Why are there so damn many of them? I have room for 5 at most. *whine*

Big Plans
It keeps snowing here. Which is sort of okay, except that I hate the disgusting slush that I have to walk on everywhere. Part of city living, I guess. Still. :/
I already have some of my weekend planned out. On Friday, after Shakespeare class, Gretchen's coming over so that we can watch Julius Caesar. And on Saturday, if nothing else comes up, there's always Anime Club. I also would like to run to Half-Price Books and Borders (What?! A girl has needs.). Louise also tells me that Westfield comics is running a survey right now, and if you fill it out, you enter a chance to win a $100 spree at their store. I think I would explode from sheer happiness if I ever won something like that. Just spontaneously combust.

These are the thoughts I have in the morning when I'm still hyper and not yet hating people.

Skewl
In other news, I have yet to really hate school this semester (except for my Sci-Fi/Fantasy class, which has thus far been SO disappointing). Especially Jane Eyre! OMG, it's so good, I love it. Although, I'm going to go ahead and say that Charlotte Bronte is NOT being subtle with the end of my most recent chapter - lightning strikes a tree in the middle of a storm and leaves it split in half! And not just any tree, but the tree under which two characters just professed their love for each other! Hmmmmm, I suspect angst.
Also, in Shakespeare class, we're working on Hamlet. I don't even know why I love Hamlet so much. I really don't. All I know is that I sit there during lecture scarcely able to contain myself because ANGST. Hamlet is so smart! So angsty! I love him. I had never really liked Ophelia before, but the professor provides some nice insight. Also, lecture is a much more rewarding experience when I'm already very familiar with a play, and have read lots of criticisms on it. Unfortunately, when it comes to Shakespeare, I've really only ever done that with Hamlet. Ah, well.

Noes.
WTF, it's February! It's time to turn the page in my Battlestar Galactica calendar. Good thing February means 2 pictures of Gaius/Six about to have sex.

Why do I waste so much time on the internets? If I was actually doing stuff, I'd have more things to write about. With that in mind, I'm off to prepare for the day and finish up some stray homework!

Things I Must Say

Glee
First of all....I have finally posted my huge post containing all of my Harry Potter notes for books 5 and 6! I put it at LiveJournal because 1) it contains MASSIVE spoilers for both books, so don't read it unless you've already read them! and 2) it's hella long. Because that's how nerdy awesome I am.

Also, I have updated Ghost Hunters again. I've been waiting to get to this part for a while, so I decided to just do it, so that I'd be excited about writing again. This part didn't turn out as cool as I wanted it to, but I guess that's what the revision process is for. Anyway, for now, there is action! Even a gun! :O

I saw the Casino Royale movie tonight with Dave, Jennifer, and Ryan. It was badass. Eva Green and Daniel Craig were both awesome, which makes me excited for the theatrical release of The Golden Compass, because they're both going to be in it.

Feminism
Next, a discussion of the image on a shirt that a customer recently came through my line at work and purchased. For reference, here is my own rendition of the image on the shirt-front:

So, let's review here. First off, the girl is easily distinguishable both by the bow in her hair and her skirt. Also, the "problem" that is the subject of the t-shirt is her act of voicing thoughts, an act associated with intelligence. The female is expressing herself. And how is this "problem" "solved?" Ah! Pushing the offending expressive female off a cliff into oblivion. A violent end to a most offensive act.
Worst of all? The customer was a middle-aged woman paying for clothing for her son. SERIOUSLY?! I was disgusted. What the hell is the matter with society?

Anyway, I need to get to sleep. Tomorrow, I drive to Madison, and I'm SO excited to see Antoine. :) Okay, sleep now.

This Post Has Been the Best Waste of Time EVER

EDIT: Woot! After 4 hours of transition, my blog (and all my other blogs) have switched over to the new Blogger! I'll be working on adding 'tags' for all my past entries....but with almost 4,000 of them, it will probably take a while, :)

Harry Potter and the Blog Posts I Dream About
OMF, the title of the 7th (and final) Harry Potter book has been released on JKRowling.com!! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows MMMMM, Gordric's Hollow, perhaps?! (Antoine informed me that the title is spelt 'Hallows,' expressly killing my theory. ;_;) Have there been any other hollows mentioned in the books thus far? I don't think so, and as I remember, that's where Harry was headed at the end of the last book. I STILL have that Harry Potter post that I started last time I reread the last 3 books....I can't even remember when it was. Because I caught lots of things! A couple of days ago, I gathered all of the posts that I've started and need to complete: the Harry Potter one, the Wisconsin Book Festival, one on home awesome the anime Rose of Versailles is (I've just finished episode 22 out of 40), and a page detailing my heroes. Just for fun. Oh, Winter Break, why are you not here yet?!

WOE
Chad and Louise have already left the house. Paul leaves tomorrow. I'll leave some time Saturday morning. That way I'll have time to like, clean, pack, and spend some time with Antoine on Friday. I won't be able to see him for a while, :( He's going to Florida to visit family, and then home to Michigan. I think that by the time he gets back here to Madison, I'll almost come back (I'll be here probably one week-ish before classes start up again on the 22nd?).

Actually, finals haven't been TOO terrible yet....Yesterday really sucked because I was typing my Elections & Voting Behavior take-home final all day long until 5:00. But, aside from Monday when I had 2 finals on the same day, everything has been rather spaced out this semester and I've had time to really take a break and de-stress after each "Hell Day." Now, I only have my American Lit final left, and....if I can ever bring myself to study today....I think it'll go just fine. Today, I will actually shower before 4:00 pm! This is a miracle, considering my schedule of the last two days. The days themselves are crawling by impossibly slowly. I haven't been on campus since Monday, as I've had no reason to be, and yeah. I just keep checking the computer, asking myself things like, "Is it really Wednesday? It didn't suddenly become Thursday without anyone telling me?"

It's Almost Christmas! And Christmas Break! And yay!
It's finally time that I can allow myself to think about what I'd like to do over Winter Break, aside from working at ShopKo ( :/ ) and seeing my friends ( :D ). Life-related things, such as "get a hair-cut" and "find out whether or not you got the internship you applied for, and if not, somehow find something to DO next semester!" are on my list.

But what of leisure?! Maybe I'll just bring back Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords for my laptop, and finally finish it. Wow, I played that during the second half of the summer and now I can scarcely remember it. I think I was just about to hit the "OMF Climax, Everything You Thought Was Real Was Actually a Lie!" part of the game. Oh, video games!

As for movies and TV series....my Netflix subscription should keep me satisfied....along with the piles of CDs full of anime that I've downloaded but haven't had time to watch yet. At the top of my queue are some Miyazaki movies, the Utena movie, the first season of Buffy, the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender (I want to see if it lives up to its hype....and if nothing else, my nephew will be very pleased), and lots of anime series like Gankutsuou, Princess Tutu, and Full Metal Panic! Actually, there's no way in hell I'll watch all of those over break; the mail doesn't move that fast! Heeheehee.

I definitely want to bring home my Cowboy Bebop DVDs and watch all of the episodes I haven't seen yet. I OWN this series and still haven't finished it! There is no excuse! I think that I just love it so much that I don't want it to end.....
Also, I think I might bring back the VHS fansub tapes I have of the first season of Sailor Moon, courtesy of Creighton and Carolyn. *cackles*
I fully intend to burn through as much media as possible, and keep a list of my conquests, similar to Spring Break 2006. Just think, Blog Readers! If that is what I can accomplish in just one week, then imagine the possibilities for December 22 - January 21! Reheheheheheheeeeee!

Lastly....I wasn't going to do this, but my result was so accurate that I couldn't resist.
My Peculiar Aristocratic Title is:
Honourable Lady Jacqueline the Reticent of Withering Glance
Get your Peculiar Aristocratic Title

And now, I will actually be productive! I will shower! I will make and eat lunch! And then I will STUDY American Literature for a long time because I like it and I want to do well! And THEN I will meet Steph and be awesome on campus with an exchange of Christmas presents and glee. That rapist bastard was caught a few days ago, so I feel safer. But I think the pepper spray will remain in my coat pocket, ;)

wNov 22, 2006

time for bed, >O

I could have done lots of things this afternoon/evening, such as spending time with next semester's class schedule and the timetable. I could have read a lot of Henry V. I could have read a lot of either of the American Lit books I have to read. I could have printed off and read some Poli Sci readings. Instead, I somehow wasted the entire night. I watched anime with Kristen and Louise, which felt like being back in the dorms of Liz Waters again. I also went over to Steph's for a while with Chad and just talked for a while, which also felt like living in the dorms again. It's so weird not living with Steph. I don't like it, :/

Instead of wanting to read the things I need to read for school, I keep feeling like reading older things I've already read many times, like Redwall. Or my Sailor Moon manga.

Thanksgiving will be a good day, but also sad. Why? Because Antoine's friend/Gordon's roommate Andrew the Pirate (we call him The Pirate because he grooms a handlebar mustache, owns a rat, sails, and is very pirate-like) is having a beard-growing contest. Now, I am attracted to Antoine for many reasons, and I'm not ashamed to admit that while the vast majority of them are for reasons that are deeper than skin, a few of them are superficial. I find him to be an attractive dude! Which is why I'm sad he's growing a beard, ;_; Especially if it's going to last until almost the end of March! WTF! I hope he gets sick of it before then, lol. I don't know why, but I have just never liked facial hair. Antione assures me that he's doing it because he wants to see what it'll look like. I keep saying, "But I like your face!" I think I am having no affect.
As his girlfriend, I will try to be supportive of this venture in spite of my sadness.

I've felt restless the last couple days because all I can think about is the people I want to see once I get home. Or even just being lazy and reading for school/pleasure. I'm ready for a small vacation.

Is there any Random Fandom News?
Battlestar Galactica is moving to Sunday nights, and for this I am glad. If they want to expand their viewing audience beyond The Geek, they need to not air the show at 9:00 on a Friday.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has been my favorite Harry Potter book thus far, but I'm afraid to see the movie. On the whole, I haven't been a huge fan of the movies thus far. Unlike the Lord of the Rings movies, which managed to capture the tone and beauty of the books, I really don't feel like the Harry Potter movies live up to the books at all. A trailer has been released for OotP. I don't know if I'll like it. I don't like the guy who plays Sirius Black - he's supposed to be hot, hello! And as much as I like Helena Bonham Carter, I don't think I like the way they have her as Bellatrix Lestrange. She's not quite evil enough, and her hair is too stringy. Maybe I just like Makani's fanart too much, :)

I must sleep! Because I must pack my things tomorrow morning so that I can go home for Thanksgiving!
