It's a win!

As reported by Anime News Network....

Hulu.com is hosting the first 12 episodes of the anime series Honey & Clover, and the first 11 episodes of the anime series NANA.

If you click the ANN link at the beginning of this post, it will take you to ANN's pages, hosting both shows via Hulu.

Further proving the awesomeness of Viz, all of the episodes are sub-titled, and not dubbed.

As I've mentioned before, these are two of my all-time favorite shows; so you should watch them!

All you lucky bastards who have this movie playing in your city had better blog about it!!


Watched "The Prestige" last night. It was bad-ass. I preferred Hugh Jackman's character to Christian Bale's, but then Bale's mostly just yelled a lot during the movie. Still, I was unspoiled for all of the turns and surprises, which made things fun. Also, the presence of David Bowie increases the greatness of any movie by 10 points.


You can get the first episodes of the animes Honey & Clover and NANA on iTunes for free now through August 31. Both of these series are examples of realistic (they're still dramatic, but there are no transformations to magical school girls) shojo, and they are two of my favorite series of all time. Today's Kate Beaton comic is about the Bronte sisters, and it is glorious.
I bought a used copy of a book claiming to be a metabiography of the Brontes today at a bookstore. OM NOM NOM.

Nearing the end of summer

Does anyone else just feel sorry for Senator Craig? I mean, he obviously has repressive issues, to seek out intimate connections in an airport bathroom. There must be lots of self-hatred there, too, with all his work for anti-gay legislation. What a sad existence, :(

I finished watching what I will assume is only the first season of the anime NANA (the manga is still on-going, and nothing really got wrapped up). Wow, what a poignant ending. Also, the flash-forward has me extremely worried, as to the person who is not there!! But yeah. The NANA manga is also awesome (exact same storyline as the anime), but watching it with color and listening to the amazing music just makes the show awesome. At times, I feel silly because it's so soap opera-ish, but then the characters will say something so profound that details exactly the same feelings that I have felt before. It's hard to put into words how this show makes me feel, but it was similar to what Honey & Clover did for me. I highly, highly recommend watching NANA. As with Honey & Clover, I feel that even someone who doesn't regularly watch anime would like this show. I'm dying to know what happens now, though....I might have to start downloading manga chapters.

My week of non-work continues. Yesterday, I cleaned a lot, including the floors of both of my closets. More posters were hung up today and yesterday....maybe I'll take new pictures of my room. It has changed since I moved in one year ago. I also did laundry today, which was exciting. Tonight, Anime Club had another organizational meeting before the semester begins, and I feel happy with it. We're really trying to restructure the Club to encourage the members to be social and involved. If you are a student at UW, or a faculty member (and I know some of you on my LJ Friends List are!!), you should come some time, if you like anime or are interested in trying it. It's neat stuff, and we have some good ideas for the semester's social activities.

Chad (my roommate and friend since birth) is starting his first year of Law School at UW this year, so I get to live vicariously through him. "I think you should do it," he said about Law School after this first day of Orientation, when he was all excited about making friends and meeting neat professors. "If I'm basing my life off of your experience, I think I'll wait until you've had at least a week of classes, and then we'll talk again," I quip.

I went to Antoine's for a while last night, and we did one of my favorite things, which is reading on the couch together. I just picked up Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping, and it's extremely interesting so far. Did you know that while the United States only accounts for 4.5% of the world population, we use 24% of its resources, and emit 23% of greenhouse gases?? How about that 78% of people say that Americans are "very materialistic," but only 8% consider themselves to be materialistic? Disgusting! In some ways, dating Antoine has shown me how materialistic I am. I remember doing a double-take when I realized that he owned no DVDs (at least, none that I have seen). Even now, as I cast my eyes around my room for things I own that Antoine doesn't, I mentally justify everything. "I have six kinds of lotion on my dresser, but I NEED them....I have over 100 books here, not to mention about 200 at home, but I can't bear to part with them!" Maybe reading this book will give me a little perspective.
Antoine read nearly an entire volume of Tramps Like Us manga over my shoulder, and he found it as amusing as I do. I highly recommend it, but pay attention to the "Older Teen" warning on the back cover - it is not for little kids!

Tomorrow's goal is to take the car out and buy some random toiletries that are needed, and possibly a bookshelf if I can find one. And then, I'll meet my work friends at the Silver Dollar for the Packer game, and laugh at them because they worked all week, and I didn't.

It feels like this summer has been a dream and I'm only waking up now. I have a planner, and am making plans in it. The Daily Cardinal is in print again. I am feeling creative. I haven't written anything yet, but I generally take it as a good sign when I think about my characters constantly.

I'll show you my strength now / I'll show you my love now

HOLD ON, IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST. There is a new trailer out for the fifth Harry Potter movie, Order of the Phoenix. Thus far, I haven't cared for the Harry Potter movies too much despite loving the books. Still, OotP was my favorite. Everyone complains about Harry's angst, but you know, he had good reasons for his angst in this one, and really, the majority of the Badass Action goes down in this book. Plus, Luna arrives on the scene, and what more could you ask for? The movie looks pretty sweet. ALSO, Helena Bonham Carter will be Bellatrix, and yeah. I'm sold. Some time before the 7th books is released, I will find all my own entries with theories and make a list or something.

My room is a mess, and I feel like a complete slob. I can tell that finals are drawing near because I keep having drawn-out papers due. I finished my Lord of the Rings paper for tomorrow, but will then spend all of tomorrow working on the paper due Tuesday. I don't have time to work ahead, let alone stay on top of my readings. I'm glad to be going home this weekend. I need time out of this room, even if I'll still be chained to my homework.

The farmer's market on Saturday was nice. I think that I got a little more tan without burning. Today, I've felt sickly and weak all day, which is pretty annoying, but will probably be even moreso tomorrow when I'm not lying around writing on my laptop all day.

I really like the latest opening sequence for the anime NANA. It seems like it's taking forever for new episodes to get subbed, so I was really excited when two were released this weekend. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone else who watches this anime, or reads the manga, so I won't bother with fangirl squee.

Every time I read an xkcd comic, I swear that the artist can read my mind.

Well, it's been 4 days....

....and I do swear that at some point, I'll upload pictures of amusing presents I received for you all to look at. A lot of people on my LiveJournal friends list have posted lists of everything they got for Christmas. I didn't really ask for anything specific, but I've received useful things, funny things, and a couple random books that I wasn't expecting, but still love.

I know that I haven't blogged in a while, but I guess I really haven't had that much to say. I almost blogged Tuesday night after a very rage-related incident at the part-time job I have in a store, but common sense prevailed at the last second, and I didn't post it.

Life is stagnant here at home. Seeing people I haven't seen in a long time is nice, but overall, life is insufferably boring. I work a few days per week at my job - I'm grateful to get money (my wage isn't much, but it's something), so thus far I've been able to handle my infrequent shifts. I've been reading a lot and watching some anime, and peppering most nights with spending time with high school friends or family (or both). It's really nice to stay in my pajamas until 2:00 pm, which is what I'm doing right now. I've also been trying to figure out the status of this internship I'm trying to get for next semester. We'll see what happens, but I'm pretty determined, so hopefully things work out.

I watched the first 4 episodes of the anime series Haibane Renmei with Ryan and Dave, and all three of us were unimpressed. Still, I had rented all 4 DVDs from the library and I've since finished the 13-episode series by myself. It did redeem itself in that the characters became interesting enough that I cared about that. The plot is essentially a story about salvation and friendship. The art style is nice, too. Overall, I liked the series, but not enough to go out of my way to recommend it to friends. Watch it if you get the chance, but there are much better series out there.

The 32nd episode of the anime NANA was subbed, so I've seen that. However, in the last couple of episodes, a new plot line has been introduced that has made things almost disgustingly melodramatic. I'm too attached to both the characters and the music to abandon the series now, so I'm really hoping that it will redeem itself. Still, I adored the series up until this point, and would recommend both it and its manga counterpart to anyone looking to start up something new.

Also, I'm closing in on the anime series about the French Revolution, Rose of Versailles, so look for a more detailed synopsis of that once it's over! I enjoy watching it, and I learn about French history at the same time! It's a win.

Anyway, I'm off to take a shower now. Perhaps afterward, I'll be active enough to change my sheets, go to the bank, peruse some book stores, and stop in by some places that sell used DVDs and check for anime. Of course, I could also lay on the couch and watch more Sailor Moon, or finish my book. We'll see, ;)
